Lake Erie Walleye Management Plan Out Now

Walleye are valuable sport fish across the Great Lakes basin. In Lake Erie, this is no different as the lake is commonly called the “walleye capital of the world.” But keeping the lake full of abundant walleye stocks takes a lot of work.

Some of the efforts to keep Lake Erie’s walleye fishery healthy are detailed in the Lake Erie Walleye Management Plan for 2015 to 2019. The plan covers the total allotment of walleye allowed for each of the five states and provinces that depend on the lake for the popular game fish.

Once the regions have received their allotments, fisheries managers and state officials are free to divvy up the fishing limits as they see fit. In the Canadian Province of Ontario, the commercial fishing industry gets most of the catch. In the U.S., recreational fishing for walleye tends to take more priority since it provides a lot of economic benefit via tourism.
